The Listening Club

The beginnings of a more intellectual critique and discussion of works of audio. For every entry on our Substack feed, we introduce a different piece of audio and share some musings about it—how it was made, what distinguishes it, and why we find it interesting.

Sometimes the audio is a thing we made, but more often it’s a work made by someone else.

We are trying to delve more into the potential and power of sound.

This has long been the aim of The World According to Sound. We believe that audio has incredible power to encourage self-reflection, social critique, and meaningful change. We also believe that, for the most part, it’s not being used that way. What’s more, we don’t have a full understanding of what that is ourselves.

The listening club is our attempt to try and build that understanding. The project is built on all the work we have done at WATS over the years—the radio program, in-person shows, and virtual events.
